Broken Window

Sterling Wells
at Metropolitan Structures, Baltimore
July 10-19

------------------------------

A broken-out Subaru Legacy hatchback window is raised to eye-level on a wooden structure. The viewer’s gaze passes through the car window before reaching the building’s ideally proportioned windows, and continues to the verdant landscape beyond. From the raised rear, the car angles down to the floor, as if in mid-air. The austerity of the modern space is interrupted by a car made of salvaged parts. Viewers may enter the car, and experience the room’s architecture from within.

The building is very much designed for cars, although the car park is discretely hidden. Residents approach the entrance via a long semi-circular driveway, where doormen assist them as they de-car, before they walk across a spacious lobby to the elevator bank. Its design ignores the American preference for privacy. Both the building and a car are fish tanks. The building because the windows are so large; interior and exterior become one. A car is a fish tank in that it’s a climate-controlled glass container, enclosed from the outside environment.

It’s hard to say too much about this sculpture because it has not been built yet. Getting the materials into the building will be the first challenge. I’ll lay down drop cloths and put up plastic. - SW
